Giant manta ray injured by hooks asks group of divers for help

Manta rays are among the most intelligent creatures in the marine world. And like many other animals, they know how to make themselves understood by humans, especially when the need arises.

Here is a great example of that, in which one of them in a distressful situation came to ask for help from divers. And she got the help she needed.

This video, made in early July in Western Australia, in Ningaloo Bay, we see that a manta ray came to ask a group of divers for a helping hand. Freckles (the name she was given by the divers), was in distress – she had hooks stuck under her right eye.

Freckles can be seen swimming in the middle of a group of snorkelers and approaching their guide, Jake, who eventually pulls the hooks out of the manta ray.

Jake Wilton, diving guide and photographer, testifies:

“SHE STARTED TO ROLL OVER AND PRESENT HER BELLY. YOU could see she THAT trusted us because she WAS UNROLLING AN SHOWING US the hooks. “

Monty Halls, TV presenter and marine biologist, was present during this expedition:

“Jake WENT DOWN again and again AND AGAIN, AND THE ANIMAL DIDN’T MOVE AWAY; I think the MANTA knew Jake was trying to GET THE HOOKS OUT. SHE UNDERSTANDS WHAT’S JUST HAPPENED. It’s one of the BEST things I’ve ever seen underwater. “

This is not the first time that divers have come to the aid of marine animals injured or trapped by human activity. Sometimes it is the only option and it’s fascinating to see that some creatures have the intelligence to know that humans can help, not to mention the trust they have in us.

But it may be time to consider what is causing these problems in the first place to prevent them from happening in the first place.
